5-Simple-Activities-for Transitions-in-the-Classroom

Smooth transitions can make or break your day, which is why having go-to activities for transitions is essential for any classroom.

That’s why I’ve pulled together my favorite transition ideas to help make these moments smoother. With a little structure (and a lot of fun), your students will know exactly what to do every step of the way—and you’ll spend less time managing behavior and more time teaching. Best of all, they’re simple, quick, and easy to use with any group of students!

Here are some tried-and-true ideas your students will love!

Movement & Sound Transition Activities

These activities encourage purposeful movement in the classroom, helping students stay engaged and reducing the likelihood of distractions or disruptions.

Action & Voice Task Cards for classroom movement breaks and classroom transitions

How It Works

  • First, choose an action or sound from the deck
  • Then, students transition from the activity to the next while doing the action or making the sound

Students stay on task because their attention is on the movement or sound task, making them less likely to cause disruptions. Use for:

  • Getting out materials
  • Switching between centers
  • Moving between desk/carpet
  • Lining up to leave the classroom

Classroom Transition Songs

Classroom Transition song for settling down a group of students in the classroom

Tips for Using Classroom Transition Songs

  • Choose one or two songs for transition use
  • A song indicates that a transition needs to occur (cleaning, lining up, switching centers)
  • Go old school & put these songs on a CD so you never have to worry about internet issues & subs have access as well.
  • Teach students the song & sing together

Why it works…

  • Builds predictability so students know how quickly they need to complete a task
  • Reinforces expectations-transition needs to be completed before the song is done (this works well for cleaning & packing up for dismissal)
