The end of the school day can feel chaotic—but it doesn’t have to! With clear student dismissal procedures, students know exactly where to go, parents feel confident about safety, and you can breathe a little easier.
Whether you teach Pre-K, kindergarten, or 2nd grade, these simple steps will help you create an organized dismissal routine that works all year.
Gather Information Early & Communicate

Start by sending home student information forms for parents/guardians before the first day of school or during your back-to-school event.
Keep the forms simple so families can easily provide their child’s daily dismissal plan.
Tip: Communicate the dismissal procedures with parents/guardians using a letter or email. When they know the plan, they are going to help keep things simple!
Get Organized with Tracking Sheets

To keep your school dismissal process smooth and stress-free, start by organizing student information using clear & easy-to-use tracking sheets.
Using the customizable sheets I’ve created allows you to sort students by how they get home—bus, parent pick-up, walk, or daycare—making it easy to quickly reference at the end of the day.
Tip: Keep copies near your classroom door, dismissal chart & with your substitute plans.
Create Student Dismissal Procedure Materials

Dismissal Tags
Once you have the tracking sheets ready, make two dismissal tags per student—one for the student’s backpack & one for your classroom chart.
- Laminate tags for durability
- Attach one tag to the backpack using a zip tie in a visible spot
- Use an ID Badge Clip for the 2nd tag
These tags make it easy to match students to their correct transportation method & help substitutes or support staff.

Transportation Posters

Place transportation posters in your staging areas so students know exactly where to wait.
- Include bus numbers if needed
- Hang posters in visible spots
This extra visual cue helps younger students feel confident & reduces the number of “Where do I go?” questions.
Set Up a Dismissal Chart for the Classroom

Use a dismissal chart with visuals that makes it easy for little learners to take responsibility during the end-of-day procedure..
- Use ribbon, laminated transportation cards & glue gun to create a chart
- Attach student dismissal tags under the correct transportation heading
Practice, Practice, Practice

During the first week, model your student dismissal procedures step-by-step.
- Students remove their tag from the classroom chart & clip it to their shirt/backpack.
- Walk to their designated meeting area (classroom, hallway, common area)
- Dismiss students from the classroom in groups based on how they get home
- Leave the building according to your school or grade level plan
- Students give an adult the tag & a high five when it’s time to go.
- Keep the collected tags in a basket until the next day in case you are asked to verify a student made it home correctly.
Remember to…
- Model the routine & practice with the whole class
- Review daily until your dismissal routine runs smoothly without reminders
- Use visual directions to teach, review, & practice
Keys to Success for Student Dismissal Procedure
- Start with more than plenty of time. You do not want to rush through the most important routine!
- Teach students to match their backpack tag to the correct visual
- Verify everyone is in the correct spot using the checklist/tracking sheet
- Dismiss students in groups-first, bus riders, then car pick-up, etc.
